How To Create A Great Newsletter

September 7, 2023 by Matt Brady Leave a Comment

Creating a newsletter that is both engaging and informative can be a challenging task. However, with the right elements in place, you can produce a newsletter that your readers will look forward to receiving.

You will want to make sure your newsletter is clear and concise with quality content. Yup! It’s really that simple. Providing clear quality content is the golden standard in newsletters. If you can achieve this, you are well on your way. Let’s break down how you can achieve this.

How To Structure Your Newsletter

How to Create A Great Newsletter requires you to follow a structure that keeps to a template. This structure allows you to scale, have users remember you, and much more. Here is how.

Subject Line

The meat of the newsletter, the main way to get all people to view your newsletter. This is the most important part of your newsletter. One of the best ways to get people to click is the hook. Give your readers a question and an answer that makes you want to click on the article.

“The Best Newsletters For Every Industries: Are You subscribed to?”

Content

This section is for you to keep your readers coming back. You have already hooked the reader in with a great landing page, got them to open the email with a killer subject line. Now you are going to sell them to keep coming back by writing awesome content. You should format it similar to how you mentioned it in your landing page. If your content is quick reads, keep it simple. One of the best newsletter structures is TLDR. Dan has mastered the art of content.

Dan’s entire newsletter is based on TLDR(To Late Didn’t Read). In short, he wants to keep it simple. Dan mastered his niche and found a formula that his audience loves.

Design

The design is important but not top on the list of creating a great newsletter. You need a good design but like the example above not all newsletters need fancy designs. You have to understand your niche, if you are looking to create a meme newsletter you better have images and not text. Understanding your audience is very important in the design of a great newsletter.

Call to Action

You should have a few Call to Actions in your newsletter. As an example, the newsletter exploding niches opens up each newsletter with a call to action about how to start an affiliate blog.

This is just one example of how to use the Call to Action model. You don’t have to link to a course or a product but it is important to make the user do something. At the end of the newsletter have them say something to you.

“Thanks for reading today’s newsletter; reply to this email with your newsletter that you created”

A call to action like the above is perfect to end every newsletter. Make sure you answer all the subscribers who do respond and do that month over month. You will be surprised at how much you can grow.

Personalization

Personalization is an effective way to make your subscribers feel valued and engaged. You can personalize your newsletter by including their name, location, or other relevant information. Personalization can help increase open rates and click-through rates.

Targeting the Right Audience

When it comes to creating a great newsletter, targeting the right audience is crucial. We want to make sure that our content is reaching the people who will find it most valuable and engaging. There are a few key things to keep in mind when it comes to audience targeting.

First, it’s important to understand who your subscribers are. This includes not only their demographics (age, gender, location, etc.) but also their interests and behaviors. By gathering data on your subscribers, you can create content that is tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

Next, consider who your target audience is. These may not always be the same as your subscribers. For example, if you are a business selling a particular product or service, your target audience may be people who are interested in that product or service but have not yet subscribed to your newsletter.

When creating content, keep your target audience in mind. What are their pain points and challenges? What kind of information are they looking for? By addressing these needs in your newsletter, you can increase engagement and build a stronger connection with your audience.

Your newsletter can be a powerful tool for building customer loyalty and encouraging repeat business. Make sure to include content that is relevant to your customers and provides value beyond just promoting your products or services.

By understanding your subscribers, identifying your target audience, and creating content that meets their needs, you can build a loyal following and drive business growth.

Optimizing for Mobile Devices

When it comes to newsletters, it’s important to optimize for mobile devices. With more and more people accessing their emails on their smartphones and tablets, it’s crucial to ensure that your newsletter is mobile-friendly. Thankfully, companies like beehiiv take care of this for you. Allow you to focus on your design rather than formatting.

Measuring Engagement and Success

Measuring engagement and success is crucial to the success of any newsletter. It’s important to know how your audience is responding to your content so you can adjust and improve your future newsletters.

You should track the following daily:

  • Open Rate
  • Click-through Rate
  • Subscriber Count

These are the most important measurements for you as you scale your newsletter. There are many ways to grow your subscriber but sometimes you can ruin your Open Rate. It’s smart to make sure you aren’t spamming your link everywhere. It’s better to have 100 loyal subscribers than 1,000 who aren’t.

Social Media

It’s important to get on social media channels to promote your newsletter. A great newsletter will be on all the popular social media to allow their subscribers to share content with the community.

Giving your subscribers a link back to social media will help you when growing your newsletter.

Organic growth is one of the best methods for a great newsletter because it’s all word of mouth or shares in a group you can trust.

Check out my How To Grow on Reddit Guide. I share exactly how I grew my newsletter from 0-4k in 2 months using no paid ads.

Wrapping Up

In summary, a great newsletter requires lots of work. If you stick to a formula you will be right on your way to success. How to create a great newsletter should be an easier task for you with everything we covered. You will not make it if you don’t put yourself out there, have a structure you follow, and bring something the audience hasn’t seen before.

You shouldn’t look to much into send frequency based on the study we conducted it doesn’t matter how many times you send your newsletter. All get decent statistics, but once a week is the most popular.

  • Contrasting Colors: Using contrasting colors can help important elements stand out and draw visitors’ attention where you want it.
  • Above the Fold: Your most important information, including your headline and CTA, should be above the fold so visitors don’t have to scroll to see it.

Best Practices in Design

In addition to these key elements, there are several best practices to keep in mind when designing your newsletter landing page:

  • Keep it Simple: A cluttered or confusing design can be a turnoff for visitors. Keep your design simple and easy to navigate.
